How to prep/paint new Cab Mounts

Post by COOP3 »

Looking for advice on how & what type of paints for new cab mounts?
1. Do I use weld-thru primer just on the weld spots and interior side of mount?
2. Do you top coat the weld thru with regular primer and then a final coat of black or gray?
3. Would I use Etch Primer, then regular Primer then top coat?
4. Did you paint before or after you welded mounts?

Basically looking for what layers of paint were used. What brands used for Weld-thru Primers? I have the Dennis Carpenter mounts.

We use Trans Star aerosol products at work.
We use their etching primer as a weld thru.
you can paint over that but unless you're doing a show job you don't need to
prime over the etch primer. I would also prime over the welded areas and any bare metal areas.
Just scuff the parts with a red Scotch Brite and paint with a good aerosol.
Inside the mount after it's welded and painted Trans Star makes a thin amber rust proofing sealant ,
I would spray the inside of the mount area with that . it will ooze into the seams and seal them up.

I've not had to weld through any body parts but know that Keith, (the founder of the site) and most that followed him always praised the POR-15 brand name.
