What's a Good Cheap Mask?

Post by colnago »

I am planning on painting the engine compartment while I have the engine out. I haven't decided yet if I'm using paint bombs or a compressor and paint guns, but the whole thing got me wondering about my safety. What recommendations do people have for air masks?

3M and Gerson ( sp?) make a good mask that cost about the same as the cartridges of more expensive masks.

if you're just using spray bombs you could get by with a good disposable type.(not the real thin paper style) but 3M has some with two elastic straps
that work good.
they come in a box of 20 or maybe a 5 pack.

I've tied t shirts around my head for cheap before  Bought a 3m mask for like 30$ and use it all the time.

There is no such thing as a good cheap mask. Either it is good, or it is cheap. If you are painting outside in a well ventilated area you can get away with a single filter mask, otherwise get a double filter. I'd recommend 3M, they are always good.

The filters themselves will eventually get used up. The more air that passes through them the quicker they wear. Most 3M masks come with a ziplock airtight bag to keep the mask in, this is designed to extend the life of the filters. I normally use a Folgers coffee can to keep mine in. Also, the filters are replaceable. HTH.
