Towing Question
I am moving from WY back to NC. I am very limited on cash. The trip alone is going to be spendy. I have a 1970 highboy I am bringing home with with me. Can I use a tow dolly? The price is almost half of what a trailer would be. Thanks Guys. I do not want to leave this truck in WY.....

Re: Towing Question
I've found that tow dollies are typically too narrow for the front axle on our trucks be they 2WD or 4WD. But who knows, there may be newer and wider dollies that do fit? It's been a while since I've checked with Uhaul or Pensky.
Good luck in your quest and PLEASE don't leave your beloved truck in WY.

Re: Towing Question
Drop the rear driveline and bolt a towbar to the front of the frame; to say the spring eye bolts.
Last towbar I bought I needed it right now! and it cost me $20 delivered from a craigslist guy in a town I'd never been in before. Towbars are great if you use them responsibly.

Re: Towing Question
So remove the drive shaft. Then bolt a tow bar? I have never used one of those before. How do they work? Meaning , will the front wheels turn?

Re: Towing Question
The vehicle you're pulling with the towbar just tracks right behind the one you're driving. It's a good idea for the vehicle doing the pulling to weigh a bit more than the one you're pulling otherwise things get squirly.
The towbar needs to be level or down at the front. Don't even think of using one that's low in the rear. You'll lift the back of your truck off the ground whenever you hit the brakes.
You can't back up.

Re: Towing Question
The cheapest way is to find a used towbar like "averagef250 " suggested, I use one every time I leave out with my motorhome pulling my "Toad". Even if you have to spend a few dollars for someone to hook it up for you, it will still be way cheaper than renting a tow dolly. To tow it, all you have to do is unlock your front hubs, transmission in neutral, transfer case in neutral, steering wheel free and drive safely. But I would remove the rear drive shaft because of the distance you would be pulling it. I got a set of magnetic lights with a long cord and plug for the rear of my tow vehicle for park and brake lights at Tractor Supply, must have these no matter how you pull it. Good luck with whatever method you choose to use, just don't leave it behind, someday you would wish you had it back.
I am of an age now that most of life's lessons were learned the hard way;
Life is hard, but it’s harder when you’re stupid.
Never approach a bull from the front, a horse from the rear or a fool from any direction.
Never ask how stupid someone is 'cause they'll turn around and show you.
Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.
If you had the choice “Looks or Brains” take the Brains, Looks will get you thru the first half, but Brains will last a lifetime.
