Food for thought????

Post by wolfpack »

Well my daughter was sick today so i decided to take a day off and in this day came up with this thought? How many old ford trucks and stuff are really out there? from previous encounters alot but what makes me mad is half of the time some old farmer won't let go of them but it's only been sitting there 10 years but he would rather hang on to it and let it rot then give it to the greater cause of someone actually using it? but with the price of steel that is hurting are cause to they would reather crush these treasures than save. To me the old cars and trucks have personalitiy something the new cars lack and you could actually work on them without a laptop computer i just love vintage iron nothing like the old school horsepower and knowing you don't have to go in debt trying to own one of these trucks and knowing if you rebuild one now it will last the rest of your days and you can give it to one of your kids later down the road. well not complaining just thought i would share some thoughts thanks for listening....Terry

I have to agree with you Terry. I just got back from the local Pull a Part and almost cried. Some idiot let a 70 F100 go to the parts yard. I really wish I had the extra cash to get the whole thing before everyone starts tearing it up.

yeah it's crazy i mean some of these junk yards and even people , sometimes you can get a really good deal and other times someone wants to rip you off, most of the time i just tell them i would give you what a junk yard would which i think is fair but sometimes if the person is being a jerk i shoot a price if they don't like it i go else where and leave them my number if they need the money they'll call...lol but the junk yards are filling up at a crazy rate with these old trucks and cars and me myself would go spend a couple of hundred and get one because at least i know what i have and i have prospects on about 6 other older ford trucks that as soon as i get a little more money i'll get I have 7 kids and i would rather them all have old ford trucks, besides gives me a reason to tell mommy bringing another one home......Terry

Yah it does suck to see these old trucks at the junkyards sometimes, knowing where they're headed :( But the way I see it (or like to see it to keep from getting depressed ;) ) is that them being there gives people like us a chance to use their parts for the trucks that will be the ones we pass on to our kids. Some must die so that others can live sort of thing. Its hard to think that these trucks are bound for the crusher, but how many are going to be put back on the road because of them? The engine from one parted out truck gave Blue an engine, another gave him a bed and windshield, stuff I'll need to get him back on the road...(at least leagally ;) ) Noble Trucks of the scrap yard, I salute you for your sacrificeImage

Knowing the large amount of trucks that are headed there now, that might not always be the case, but like I said, thats what I like to think to keep from getting depressed lol

yeah i agree liz i love these trucks but sometimes you have to part them out due to budgets and times, me i have a rough 76 i drive to work that needs alot of tlc and i have a 71 that i got in a horse trade that a pig farmer owned so to say the least she had a rough life the cab is pretty much toast and so is the whole front clip but there is something about that truck i just can't or won't part out... :hmm: plus i know of about 6 more trucks in my area that i want to get my hands on since 7 kids up and coming starting to drive i think they would learn to appreciate it more driving something old because my budget is not going to handle new stuff so i would rather spend it on old school...Terry

You're pulling at my heart strings here... I have a dream that one day I'll have about 30 acres of land with a large barn/warehouse facility. In this facility, I will bring any and every 1967-1972 Ford truck (F100, F250, F350) that I can find and obtain throught buying, trading, or charity. I will then strip them down to the frame, sandblast, primer and stock this barn/warehouse with all parts, from washers to fenders, motors to rims, and everything in between. My son, who is now 13 is desiring to be a mechanic...plus I have an 8 year old son too, who would also be in line to assist in running this operation.

I actually have a map of Southwestern Louisiana where I have plotted 67-72 trucks that are "sitting" in folks' fields and yards. If they are still there when I return from Germany in 2007...I'm going truck hunting.

So...I know exactly what you mean. It is truly sad that these are allowed to sit.

yeah i'd love to have a place like that to except for my front yard..lol na it's not that bad i just have a 71 ford and a taurus that is soon to go bye bye because it need a trans but i can't see spending the money on it so i might go to the salvage yard that i'm sending it to and see if i can wheel and deal some parts for my truck  always a horse trading type of guy and never trying to use the green back to much only when i have to. Besides if i won the lottery i would do the same buy me some land and have a direct line to ford and other people for replacement parts...but i can always dream...Terry

I know someone who did just what you're talking about 69F110, a family friend of my wife's couldn't stand to see old iron rot away so some 40 years ago he started buying them up and restoring them. Now he has about 35 or so antique vehicles in his yard. He is a painting genius and used that to fund his toys.

well since i have 7 kids my goal was to have them buy an old car or truck but i think most of them like the older trucks, is to restore them and if they decide to sell them it will help them out with going to college or keep it for college cause i know it will make it, but i just want them to understand there truck and how simple it is and appreciate what you have instead of giving it to them, which won't happen because of money, that's what i'm going through with my 14 year old now wanting to buy her a car if she buys the car i have to buy the stereo ? and i said how about you buy both and learn to appreciate what you have....Terry

Sounds like you are doing what you can to teach them to appreciate what they have and not take it for granted. My Dad did the same with me and though I didn't much care for it at the time I am doing the same with my son now.
Good job.

Well yes sadder still is when the only thing wrong, With them is the engine/or/trans(good body and what not). Or How about in Cali and other smog states.

A vacuum Hose goes bad,or the filler neck flap Won't seal.(other/smogged Vehicles) And The mechanic says it is something worse, i'tll be 1,500(to install a small rubber hose). So the guys pays local junkyard 50 to be done with it. And the mechanic goes and buys it or it gets crushed. Bad Juju there this one thinks!

For example What Terry was saying I recently Had previlage to see a perfect(except Front cab mounts) 70 F100 Ranger XLT roll into Junk Yard With blown engine. Luckily he is holding it for me. And He holds onto all older cars. Infact the only cars he crushes is the imports and the Ones that are completely stripped of all usable parts.

So for every yard that crushes these/other Beauties There is atleast 2-3 That Don't And Won't. But it depends on your area and the demand for the older parts. Out here even with gas prices the way they are nobody wants parts off of an import or a newer car.

Becuase of owning/growing up around older cars and do it yourselfer mechanics, Learned to apreciate the older stuff and to help others when they breakdown. And I am pacient with older vehicles that are going super slow. Its when the teeny bopper in the mazda you can see has nos is doing 10 mph down a 45 mph road. Thats when if safe I get up and burn his rice.

Well I have done my part, currently, besides my house occuying my 48 x 100' city lot are a '72 F250, a '64 Mercury, a '63 Ford an '80 Chebby pickups, and a '97 Acura car.

Something's got to go so I advertized the '72 and got NOOo response whatsoever. I hate to see old trucks wrecked or crushed but I can't save 'em all myself :o
Breaks my heart to see old vehicles crushed, and makes me even madder to see those ones sinking slowly but surely back to the earth because the idiot farmer thinks it's worth millions, until it becomes a rusty pile of scrap metal worth $30.
THEN he sells it. :x

If I had a few acres they would be covered in old cars. Forunately I don't LOL

I would rather have the older vehicles too, fortunately my Wife feels the same way. Currently we have a 1978 Honda GL1000, and 1984 Honda Goldwing, 1966 VW beetle, 1970 VW beetle and soon will be picking up my 69 F100 SWB. Running out of room now at the house :(

edited to add; Not a vehicle but I also have a cool 40's style Teardrop Camper that the new/old truck will be pulling.
