Best Memories of 67-72 trucks

Post by victimofwv »

Ok this may sound corny or sentimental, but I feel most of us here grew up around these trucks and certainly, most have fond memories of them. I just thought it would be cool to discuss them here. A couple of mine would be:
My Grandpa's '67 SWB custom cab he owned back in '73-'75. I was just a little tyke then and I guess this one was the inspiration to my loving these trucks so much. Sadly he traded it for a new '75 Super Cab.
My '72 4X4 in high school. I was dating a girl then, one night while taking her home the headlight switch went out and the lights began flickering on and off. It scared her silly! Funny thing is, she married me about 6 years later!

My most memorable moment was the day both my back tires went flat.

I woke up and my brother and I were going somewhere and the drivers side tire was flat so I jacked it up and put on the spare and all was good.I went by the store and put air in my tire that was flat then later on in the day we were driving and we come out of a curve and the back of the truck started shaking and I pulled over and the passenger side tire had blew to shreds  I was just wandering how bad my luck could get. Then we jacked it up put the tire that was flat that morning that I had aired up on the passenger side and it was already almost flat again so I had to call the one person I hate to ask for anything (my father) and tell him I needed him to come pump up my tire.He got all mad like always and turns out my uncle comes to pump it up but my dad was with him.So after putting it off forever I went the next day (thaniks to some fix a flat) and got 2 tires put on the back wheels.

So thats not exactly a good or funny memory but its the one I wont forget.

I had about a ton and a half of old sidewalk my roommate had left on my 69 highboy. It was halloween night, we were partying hearty. For reasons I will not disclose we were on a mountain trail when the master cylinder blew out, then on the way back the lights went out too. I'm pretty sure all three of us were too messed up to be scared, made it back to the party ok though.

I was out wheeling with a bunch of buddies in Jeeps and I found a rock that was a steep ramp like structure. I decided to show those short wheel base guys how flexy a 30+ yr. truck can be. It ramped real good and generally impressed the onlookers. To this day I think that frame is still twisted from that chest pounding trick!

I remember driving my first 67 swb 3 on the tree at 17. It was my brother in laws and was light green. It was the first 3 sp. I ever drove so thought I was pretty hot s(*t. Came to a red light and some kids were going across in the cross walk. One kid looks at the truck and laughs pointing at it. I thought it was pretty cool but I guess they didn't :x . Then remembered my BIL had installed an air horn and compressor from a semi under the hood and asked the kid if he could come over because I thought I heard strange noises under the hood. He walked over and bent down to the hood and "BWAAAAAAAAAAAAP" . I thought I was gonna need a new pair of tighty whities I was laughing so hard :D . The kids ears hurt too much for him to do anything :o and his buddies were laughing pretty good. I bet he's a chebby owner to this day with that memory. I didn't even stall it when the light changed and probably should have helped $ wise getting my BIL new tires.

Thanks, that felt good. Hadn't thought of that in years.

I remember traveling all over the state in my dads truck because we moved a couple times and my dad would drive back and forth every week to his new job in a different town, to the town we were moving from. I would also go to work with him to fix airplanes. I always liked the truck, because it sat up high, and it was simple, with nothing but a radio. When he got a different job in management, he stopped driving the old truck, and bought a toyota. Thats when I really started to miss it. It sat in storage a couple years until we started to restore it. When we went to get it, we flooded it trying to start it, and it caught on fire in the storage unit. We had to get behind the truck, and push it out of the storage unit, while it was on fire. That was scary, but fortunately the flames barely got the hood and we were planning on replacing all the parts that got burned anyways. We have had that truck for about 14 years now, and it never really let us down, until we neglected it. Because of the 71, I wanted a one to drive, and we found a 72. My dad drives the 72 sometimes, and it reminds him of the 71. The 71 is probably our most prized and sentimental possesion, and we will never get rid of it.

I got my old truck about 12 years ago, as a second truck to fix up someday and to have incase I needed it. I had a chevy s10 also at the time. I grew up being a chevy man, do to my dad being one. We never had anything but chevy's while I was growing up. Anyway, my dad grumbled after I told him I bought an old ford pickup. . Anyway my dad's old 72 chevy crapped out on him about 2 years ago, so I offered to let him use my old 68 while he was fixing his. At first he was like, no way a dang ford in my driveway. So I took my 68 and just left it anyway, because I knew he would need it to haul parts etc. from his chevy. Well i finally got my old 68 back about a year later :woohoo: and to this day, he still asks me about my old ford truck.

I think one of my best memories is from my old 70 f-100, me and a buddy were trying "rescue" a 61 buick lesabre from a closed wrecking yard a couple years ago. It was wedged in sideways between stuff we couldnt move so I kept trying to pull it out crooked with a tow chain, but with flat tires and soft mojave sand it didnt want to move. After a number of launches in granny gear I ripped the bumper off the front of the buick so we attached it better to the frame. Then I couldnt get traction in the sand (no posi) so I loaded a bunch of heavy stuff in the truck, trannys, heads whatever. my buddy couldnt believe I was abusing my truck for this cause but I knew it was tough and it pulled that damn car outta there. I hope I have fun memories of my latest f-250.

Definitely the best memory is when I lined up against this other '67 which also had a 460 swapped in it, and raced, and trashed him :D... 2 straight piped 460 67s full throttle.... AWESOME

My best memories are of my uncle's '72 3/4 ton that had no power steering, and me at 14-15 and my dad and him going bird hunting in it.
He tossed me the keys to his new truck as we were running some pheasants up a coulee draw and told me to run his truck up to the other end and back flush the birds.
I was too young for a drivers licence then and that armstrong steering was all I could do to turn.. but I got it there, a couple miles up the coulee! Can't remember if I got a bird with the .410 he lent me or not.. funny. It's the truck not the hunting I recall best.
He's gone now and I sure miss my uncle, and his great sense of humour, I'll never forget him or that hunting trip.

Strange that all these 33 years later I own a 3/4 ton '72 with armstrong steering... never thought about that before.. it picked me, I never chose it..

Going hunting, fishing and frog giggin in my Uncle's 68 Ranger F100 360. My cousins and I would take road trips and climb from the cabin to the bed for cold drinks while cruisin 70 down to the highway. :nono:

That 360 FE was one smooth running engine. We smoked the rear tires on a few occasions...my Uncle never could figure out why his tires were wearing so quick. :shh:

But he and the truck have passed on. Great memories. Great thread!

My Dad's 68 F100 SWB. We got it painted black, Daddy didn't like it and sanded and primered it...and it stayed primered forever. That truck had too many good memories for me to begin. Basically, I grew up raccoon hunting. So, every Friday and Saturday night from about age 7 to 18, we were hunting, in that truck. When school was out, we was hunting. Alot of memories..but mainly just that it was Daddy's truck and I was blessed enough to ride in it about every day of my life up to age 18. We hunted, fished, camped, worked, played, slept, and yes, we even did some frog giggin ourselves in that truck. It smelled like Daddy, looked like Daddy (wierd, but the thing just fit him right) and honestly, Dad's my hero...the standard by which I measure all men...and his truck is the measure for trucks as well.

Ah yes...the memories. They sure be good ones. I agree...great thread, thanks for jogging my memory...I think I'll go call Daddy now and tell him I love him.

My memmory is my Grandfathers retired cal-Trans Truck 1967 Twin I Beam F100 He had bought from state auction in 75.This is back when California left all the extras in the vehicles except Sirens and scanners. After my uncle had been pulled over in it for impersonating cal-trans employee. He sprayed it flat black and grandpa put a camper in the bed.

And my second memmory is the fact that sight unseen i bought the 72 f100 ranger xlt Simply because of my first memmory and because i am a champion of what others consider a lost cause.

I don't want to give em a heart-attack. That is what would happen if I answered the door in the buff. Heck it almost scares me to death when I step out of the shower and look in the mirror.~Mancar1~

Champion of a lost cause. Thats me I guess. I can't wait to hear the lecture my Dad will give me when he finds out about my new Highboy. "Why the hell don't you buy a decent truck?"
That will become a "new" memorie!
