Really Good Humor Ice Cream Truck- everybody needs 1 like it

Post by CACWBY »

OK - Long Story - went to the Volo Auto Museum - George Barris Hot Rod & Custom Show in Volo IL today - mainly because I wanted to meet George Barris and get him to autograph my glove box door (which he did!!!!) - not just because he's a legend which of course he is, but I found out last year that he & I went to the same High School, San Juan High in Citrus Heights Calif. One of Northern Californias oldest. Except he graduated in 1943 and I barely squeaked through in 1964.

So any way - what's the first thing I notice after we park, this Kool 1967 F100 Ice Cream Truck. Guy named Carl having a ball and earning some money with his 67 F100 Good Humor Ice Cream truck, I even bought a couple bars and gave him a Fordification.com card.

That IS pretty sharp! I'd definitely have spent some time checking out how that was put together. Thanks for sharing, CACWBY.

Carl the owner says its pure 67 from dash & windshield forward, and a 67 frame and rear end, but all body mods from windshield back were done by a company in Chicago area (sorry I didn't write it down). He says it was based on a Camper Special - but is that right? No trim on windshield and he says that the grille and headlight trim was originally painted steel - and I thought that a Camper Special had a higher level of trim, but I could be wrong.

Here's the guy's website - I just realized it was his card - www.goodhumortrucks.com

I saw a rusty old '65 a couple of years ago that some old-timer was still using every day---not too far from Volo...I'd be curious as to whether they had reefers or were just well insulated and used dry ice...I would imagine Ford or Good Humor contracted with a jobber to fabricate the conversion when they were new...They were similar looking to the old phone company trucks until they started using vans...

I am glad you like my Good Humor Truck.
The trucks were sent to Hackney Body company, from Ford, I think the were in Texas. They were built for one thing, and one thing only to sell ice cream. Hackney put everything from the dash back , Alum. dimond plate floor in the drivers area, the freezer runs on 220, plug it in for about 6 hours a night, and it get down to -20, and stays cold by thick cold plates on the side walls, and roof. There are only 2 doors in the frezer, one on the pas. side, and one on the rear. There are florecent light on the 2 sides, and front and rear, run by inverter balaces.
The motor is a 300 6 cyl. with the c4 auto trans.
I think I will enjoy your site, and will check back often.

Hey Joe...thanks for popping in! That really is a neat truck. I don't suppose you have any of the factory paperwork on that, would you? That would be interesting reading, I think. So the cab floorpans are diamond-plate? I'd be interested in seeing pics of that. What are the cold plates made out of?
