What I do when I am bored..

Post by 72hiboy4x4 »

Well, we bought a house just recently. and the little lady decided that some landscaping changes needed to be done. one of those was the removal of a few trees that are where the deck is going to be.
so, I called my trusty (and as she calls it, very ugly) ol' '72 out of semi-retirement and proceed to make said changes...

this video shows it all....

I have a few still shots from a relative's place somewhere of the same truck pulling down 70 ft. alders to clear the pasture out. this ain't the first time i've done this  pulled the rear wheels off the ground 2 ft! that time

PS... thanks Keith for setting up the link for the video! U RULE! :fr:

is there a secret to how high up you attach the pulling cable? I have some hunnerd foot pines in my yard, the lumber prices might make it worth it to pull a few down....

the higher the better (for leverage)

but I dont think a small truck will pull a pine tree down. too much root structure. the alders were about 12-14" across at the base and had a shallow root structure.

but hey!! try it and tape it so we can enjoy the action!!!

I can see it now:

Be careful and don't use and kind of stretch line. The snap back when they part will literally take your head off. I watched a kid get his leg ruined from a nylon line and he was "lucky"
We us chain when possible and the Navy has gone to kevlar and aramid reinforced line because it doesn't stretch.

Nope, I use a 8" 80,000 lb test towstrap used for the BIG jobs. I haven't even streched it yet in 7 years of pulling things around. the strap has d-links on each end, and it gets hooked to a clevis on the truck and the chain on the tree. the only thing that can come apart is the chain hooked to the tree.
I've pulled fully loaded semi-trucks out of ditches with this strap. It ain't gunna come apart.

Last year I winched up to a big Tamrack tree and started cutting down. The damn thing popped up off the stump and went the other way. Guess what came sliding down the hill. Yea my Ford all locked up. Guess whos hung over butt went running up the hill to hit the winch release on its way down. Time for a beer break.

Nice. Way to go. Have you heard of the good year tires with kevlar?

Dang Mike, I was wondering why you hadnt called me. I see you've been kept busy! That video is AWESOME, and here I've been clearing my property the old fashioned way, with a dumb ole chainsaw and whining like a little baby everytime I have to stop to sharpen the stinkin chain!
