The ultimate rust repair job

Post by Kraig »

Tuesday evening a friend of my family brought a car by they had just bought. A 1993 Cavalier convertible. She wanted me to check it out. I started looking at it and I was a little concerned because the carpet was soaked!! The top and seals etc. looked fine. I opened the hood and noticed these BIG black blobs of something near the cowl :hmm: . I looked closer.... it was spray can foam insulation sprayed in the the holes and spray painted black!  Needless to say the water was coming in through the cowl, you could easily poke a screwdriver through the cowl! She brought the car back and got her money back (thank God). And just when I thought I had seen it all............

Think I could fix the rust on my '72 this way :D ?

That thing would haver passed Maryland inspection. Forgive me but these are the most anally retentive inspectors I have ever had the displeasure to deal with. I had a Pontiac 6000 that was in near perfect shape. Just about had to replace the " Body mounts " The inspector said they were dry rotted and cracked. I was pissed. How am I going to remove a whole body to replace the rubber mounts. I looked for other ways to do it and had an idea. I just kept spraying the 1 crack I did find with WD-40 until it swelled the rubber enough to close the tiny split. Well 80 dollars later ( The inspection fee !! ) it finally passed.

Sorry for the rant.

Oh, you mean kinda like this?

That's my '68 parts truck. The previous owner installed a 3-spd steering column to a Saginaw box but didn't have the firewall bracket to support the bottom side of the column, so he filled the hole with that spray-in foam. I guess he also decided that as long as he had the can out, he'd go around and fill all the other firewall holes. And he was no Picasso!

I've also lost count of how many junkyard trucks or parts trucks I've run across where somebody used that spray-in foam to fill up the rusted-out cab corners. It certainly doesn't stop the rust, but it does make it a little cleaner and quieter inside the cab....for a little while, anyway.

I think this stuff runs a close second to duct tape as the most overly-used and abused "fix-all" ever invented.

Maryland IS really picky on their inpections! The only good thing is you only have to do it once (at least in the county where I live).

I guess I've lived a sheltered life, this was my first exposure to spray foam insulation for rust repair :D

OMG that is so true. I'm originally from MD and the inspection process is the most nightmarish thing you ever can go through if you buy a used car. They will require repairs that are worth more than the car!

In California, there are no inspections. 8)

When we lived in Maryland about 5yrs ago I didn't have any Problems with mine.

Here in Texas they seem to be alot worse then most because it not the Texas DOT running it you have these Jo-Blows that think they know it all and are going to win a prize or stop the World from Dooms Day....(Not all but most I've met)

They just looked at my Truck and said "NO" that didn't come in that Truck. Then they start pointing out that I have to change the engine back to original plus make it stock again.....

Well I told then where to put this Bull%$it .....So I'm going to stay with Alabama because they aint got no bloody inspectors...

That's when you start taking names and asking for the supervisor.
When they ask why, say "My lawyer is going to want that info."

This is why the truck is registered in Louisianna. Being military no one even asks why. They check tires lights horn and wipers. Make you back up and hit the brakes. Pull in get yor sticker for 6 bucks. Also they give trucks 4 year plates at 10 dollars a year. Im good till 2008.
Love it.

They don't even open the hood here. Mostly lights, horn wipers ect.
I have used a bunch of that spray foam. It isn't rust repair but it will keep the elements out on a rusted out bomb for an extra year or so.

No More inspection in Oklahoma! Thank God!

For two Reasons 1.(and foremost) No Mula! Mula! To replace winshield which has 3 lovely cracks and two stress fractures from where previous owners stepson Pulled and rebuilt The engine 4 years ago.

And removed the springs in the hinges and flapped the hood back into the roof replaced the trim and left the roof and window,Hood a mess.

2. It was not bringing the state enough revenue.

Chris,

You need to find a new inspection place. Looks like JB and I don't have any trouble, but you do? You gotta a gun rack or something? I drive in, and don't even get out of the truck. They ask for the lights and horn. Thats it. Now, I live in Houston and my cars are registered there. Houston does emisions testing on cars less than 25 years old (if IIRC). Well my trucks are so is my 68 cougar. Well, I was storing my cougar up in Gilmer (north east TX) where I grew up. It sat up there for about two years while I got married and got a house. So I finially go up to spend the weekend w/ the folks and bring the cougar home. So I change the oil, put in some fresh gas and crank her up. Runs like a champ. Take it to get inspected and the lady wouldn't do it because it was registered in Houston. I said, "so?". She said that they do emisions testing in Houston and we don't have the equipment to test your car. I said, "lady, this is a 68 cougar, it is older than 25 years, and it didn't have any emisions equipment on it from the factory. You only have to meet the requirement for the year the car was built, and since there was no emisions requiment in 68, then I pass w/ flying colors." She didn't believe me so I drove it to Houston w/ no inspection sticker. What made me the madest is that I had to wait until 10am when the place opened up. If I would have known she was going to be like that, I would have driven to Houston earlier in the morning when it was cooler ( no ac! ) Also, she did the whole inspection before she looked at my paperwork (showing I'm from Houston) and said, that my brakes were bad. I said, the brakes were fine and asked when was the last time she drove a car w/ manual drum brakes.

Well, I better stop....this happened more than 2 years ago and I'm getting madder the more I remember!!!

I've had nothing but Problems with Texas DOT.I'm not the only one as Sleepy71 (Agee) went to get his Truck registered and they gave him the same crap!! He had to go to the "Pull a Part" and get a Heat Riser Shield and have it installed and he's running Headers.

They got me on :
1-Running a MSD Ignition System(Dizzy,6AL,Coil,2 Step and Timing Box).
2-Then they said I had to change my exhaust System(2.5" 2 Chamber FlowMasters).
PLUS
3-They got me because my Dumb-dumb Warning lights don't work because I use all Auto meter Gauges and have to hook all the Dumb lights back up and have them working.
:x

So I just have my Truck registered in my Home State of Alabama and have to do NO Inspection's.

Dang Chris

With your truck they should check nothing but safety.Being a former inspector in texas as recent as a year and a half ago , I dont think the regs have changed that much. The only reason they should even look under the hood is to check your brake fluid and power steering fluids and belt condition

As for on the dash all that is required is the high beam indicator, directional and 4- way indicators ,Although you cannot have any brake indicators on . But I never heard anyone require the test mode dash indicators for the oil, alt,or cooling. heck i think the are just starting to enforce the abs indicator this year
