cleaning out the cowl

Post by customcamper »

Any one have any good ideas on how to clean out the cowl just below the windshield??? My son and I are restoring a 1970 f250 cs and have the interior stripped out. I noticed the fresh air inlet at the bottom of the passanger side floor board goes up into the cowl. The cowl has about 3 inches of pine needles and moss inside. I do not want that inside once its done. Can any one help??? Thanks....Dave

Use an old antenna to poke up into the drain ports below where the heater openings are. Shop vac works great as well.

i took the two vent pieces out one on each side and used a shop vac to suck all the junk out. and if you pull those vent parts outmight as well replace the rubber seals that keep the water from coming inside
If i confussed you im sorry just tell me and ill try to explain it better

pull the vents off of the heater and the drivers side . stick your hand in there and grab the stuff and pull it out. there is a drain at the bottom that is possibly plugged with that stuff. it needs to be clear. if its in the top still just take a garden hose or go to the car wash and spray the stuff down into the bottom and then drag it out by hand.

aren't there also two of those rubber body plugs on the outside of the cowl that go up into that area? i noticed them when i changed the core support out on my first truck, and again when i wanted to see if a power antenna was possable on our old trucks without cutting sheet metal up.

Yeah, they are there, but you need to employ child labor to get anything out through those small holes.

The large oval plug in the middle of the engine compartment firewall is a good place to remove the stuff that hasn't yet fallen down inside the truck.

Are you talking about the heater vents in the kick panels?

I did mine a little different. Remove the plug under the hood in middle of cowl. Cover ext cowl ribs w/ heavy rubber mat material.
Stick heavy duty vac in plug hole and tape around it to secure it in. By closing all that you create somewhat of a suction.
Take a air hose at 120psi and blow up from vent openings. Took about an hour but i got it good and clean. Wash all out with water hose on low flow to check that drain holes are clear and no gaskets leaks. :2cents:

These stopped up cowl vents seem to be common. I'm no good at fabracating but it would be nice if a man could get some kind of snap on screen that would fit over vent cowl, look good and keep large leaves, pine needles ect.. out. :hmm:
Jamie are you out there!
