Rattle can "temporary" primering?
Hi:
I have surface rust on the hood of my truck. It's very light, no pitting or anything, but basically there is no paint anymore so it rusted. I probably won't get the truck professionally painted for a year or so.
I would like to remove the rust and give it a coat of primer. Is there a primer than comes in a spray can that you can recommend? I don't have an air compressor or paint gun.
Any other advice regarding this?
Thanks in advance.

Primer in almost any form is not water resistant...in fact, it's porous enough to still allow water to reach the metal. So spraying primer on really isn't going to do much good. If it were me just trying to get by for a short period, I'd sand it down, primer it and hit it with a coat or two of Krylon. Of course, you'll have to sand that completely off when you get your truck professionally repainted, but that's pretty much a given anyway.

I see. Thanks for the advice. I guess that will look better than primer too if I can get a close enough color match.
So Krylon is considered the best spray paint? Does the same go for their primer?

The paint! keep the coat wet, if you spray next to dry paint it will leave a dry look to the paint! spray it evenly and quick to keep it wet! practice on an old fender or something and you will see what I am talking about!

Duplicolor is good stuff too, particularly the Self etching primer.
You are going to have to sand the rust off and it would be best to etch it with a bare metal prep, then primer it. If you can't do the bare metal prep the self etching primer will do OK.
Duplicolors "Truck and Van" paint is pretty good as well and you can actually "rub it out" if you get enough on it.
If you can't find a match, you could do it flat black, or even white and it would still look better than rust or primer.

BTW,
You can get automotive paint in a spray can from www.paintscratch.com
They have a "kit" that has everything you need except the etching wash, which you should be able to get locally.

re: Rattle can "temporary" primering?
To stop the rust on my dads old truck up on the bed sides I sanded it to
bare metal an I shot it with ( Walmart Primer ) and then after the first
slick coat you can sand it with fine sand paper then the primer stays in
the pits, then I used ( walmart cear paint ) and let it cure in the sun, when
its hard I used fine sand paper, and two more coats of (Walmart Primer )!
Its better that letting it rust away! My dads old 65 he gave it two coats of
Krylon years ago sure slowed the rust!(
P.s. I primed my drag car years ago I see nothing wrong with it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(Walmart primer 97 cents) = Priceless!

Cut ( FOUR ) pieces of an old ford truck frame that has been junked, fit them to the inside of your good frame, add weld and bolts, the leafs are now inboard, time for the (big WIDE tires)!

I look at primer as the undergarments of my truck therefore I refer to the primer as lingerie Grey. So when ppl ask what color the truck is it's lingerie grey and I find her quite attractive.

re: Rattle can "temporary" primering?
Yep. My '68 is painted with rustoleum black. It took about $40 in total, including laaaquer thinner, rags, spray primer , and spray paint. Actually looks decent, even when mosquitos flew into it and i had to pick them off and paint over the fingerprint. LMAO. IT looks a hell of a lot better than spray paint spotted oxidized to hell white stock paint though.
I sprayed a LIGHT coat of rustoleum on my roll pan when i slapped it on, and small amounts of rust were showing after a week weeks.

After the primer, you could always shoot on a coat of sealer. It's used between an unknown brand of paint and a fresh coat over top. I believe it's essentially waterproof.

re: Rattle can "temporary" primering?
i would sand the surface with some 180 grit sand paper to take all the rust off then get sum stuff called (metal prep ) from ppg to clean the metal surface then there is a self etching primer from (SEM) spray a light coat over the bare metal then spray 3 medium coats of (SEM) rattle can primer yer done hope this helps. P.S. white vinager is a good rust killer wipe over the clean metal surface then primer
