Quieting vent window whistling

Post by Joe Kriston »

I ordered all new rubber for my '70 from Dennis Carpenter....including door seals, rear window and windshield seals, both gas tank neck seals, side window felt and the vent window rubber....I even had an old guy who owned an old glass shop install the vent rubber because they had these unusual copper rivets that required more know-how than I had to install them....Now they whistle at anything above 30 mph...If I fold a business card up a few times and stick it between the latch and the stainless strip it quiets it somewhat...How can I fix this correctly?...Is the spring in the latch weak....or do they sell those ivory-colored things that fit on the latch that are most likely worn down?

Is your vent window handle loose? If the roll pin or the roll pin hole is worn, it won't put adequate pressure on the vent window to seal. I don't think you can buy just the nylon tip, but you can buy the whole handle. Here's a link to it at Blue Oval Parts:

I have some of those nylon tips if that's the problem. If the handle is loose they won't help you.

Good referral, Keith. Pretty steep though at $32 a pop. Still...

Hmmm...didn't even look at the price. Yeah, that's a little steep for the average guy, but I suppose it might be worth it to someone redoing a truck and has replaced all the seals, and that's the last thing he needs to quiet things up. :o

Barry: I guess I've never looked at those vent window handles before...didn't realize those tips came off. Can they be removed and replaced without boogering them up? Can someone buy just those tips? (Inquiring minds wanna know.) ;)

If you're very careful you can pry out the tip without damaging anything. There's a 1/8" dia. x 3/16" long pin that's molded into the center of it that plugs into the handle. The tips do wear out and/or yellow and get brittle though. There's a 'left' and a 'right' so when I'm scrounging, one goes in the left pocket and the other in the right. :D I'm not aware of anyone selling the tips only, they probably would rather sell the whole handle assy. for :$$:

Joe, can you pull in on the handle and totally stop the whistling? If not then there's a problem.

Thanks for the link,Keith, but I was thinking the same thing myself...$32 each seems steep....The handles seem tight, but the nylon definitely seems worn down..But I don't see how they come off...68F250,I'll buy a couple off you if they're in good shape...

One of my objectives was to make my '70 a comfortable everyday driver as well as a good looker...Nowadays,it seems like I'm on my cell phone half the time when I'm driving,so it's nice when the cab is quiet...Although,my everyday truck is a '97 heavy-duty crewcab and it's still much quieter than my '70...even with all new weather seals and carpet and padding....

Still,it seems like these suppliers of NOS parts and the like are not too shy about charging a small fortune for these little nickel and dime items...I removed all my chrome when I had my truck painted and I think I paid over $100 just for the mounting clips to reinstall it...One of the problems with old Arizona vehicles,is though the body doesn't rust, the dash will crack, the rubber seals all dry up,the rear oil seal will spring a leak....things you don't notice much when the truck is parked, but definitely do when checking the replacement cost...
