Re: 68 f100 restoration.
I removed and started cleaning the brake hose mount for the left side. I could not take off the right side because it was riveted and not bolted.
The frame looks pretty bare now! To show you how much my family likes cars, even my deer supports NAPA!
Also removed the steering box, so I can clean and paint behind it. The frame looks pretty bare now! To show you how much my family likes cars, even my deer supports NAPA!

Re: 68 f100 restoration.
Hi Adam, I take a break from Fordification for a couple weeks and you've made amazing progress!
You are certainly giving me inspiration for my cab. I found even more swiss cheese on my passenger floorboard, so I'll be putting a pan in, too, once I've solved the leaks. One thing at a time...
Thanks for taking the time for such good photos showing your progress.

Re: 68 f100 restoration.
Thanks Leo!! I really appreciate the support. Its a bummer to find more rust, but sometimes that is standard on 50+ year old trucks! even my truck had more rust than I thought at first, but it's all fixable with enough hard work.

Re: 68 f100 restoration.
Well, the frame is now ready for paint. I spent a couple days prepping and am confident it's ready, Now I just have to have good weather. It took a couple of days to strip paint off of the frame. I just did it with a wire wheel in a drill. Then degreased it with Kerosene.
Seam sealed the cab patches. Primered all of the bare areas to help the paint stick. You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Great work , keep it up. The fun part is when all the new parts start coming in and things start looking even better.

Re: 68 f100 restoration.
I masked the cab, and put plastic on the floors.
I decided to spray it instead of brushing. So I got a gallon of tractor paint and reducer, which is supposed to make it the perfect consistency to spray. I also got a cheap Harbor Freight HVLP gravity feed spray gun. Although I am ready to paint, the weather has not been ideal, so in the mean time I will be working on smaller things.. Like getting the steering box cleaned and ready for paint. I like to use a wire wheel in a drill to remove paint. Then I wiped it down with Brakleen to degrease it. Really good work on the cleaning and paint prep. The finished product will show your attention to detail I am sure!

Re: 68 f100 restoration.
Well, I finally got the frame painted! It went pretty well, and I'm happy with the results so far. This was my first time using a spray gun, so It is not professional by any means! The only setback was when I was prepping the gun It said to tear it apart and soak and scrub all of the parts. Which was easy BUT I tried to take the fluid tip off to clean it and could not get it off. It says it takes a 19mm wrench, but a regular wrench won't fit it because the slots are to skinny. So I googled it and and online it says to get a spray gun wrench, but Harbor Freight does not even sell them! and all the other ones that are made supposedly do not fit it. I figured all of that out today and ended up trying to make something that would fit, but it did'nt work, so eventually I just yanked it off with vise-grips! So when I put it on to spray I just did it finger tight so it's easier to come off.
My first test piece was the transmission cross-member. After I got the spray good on cardboard. It looks extra shiny because it is still wet, but it is Gloss black so it will be interesting to see how glossy it is when it dries.

Re: 68 f100 restoration.
The finish on the floor pan is actually nicer than the paint on the body!
The frame rails came out pretty smooth too. I would say that I am definitely happy with the results, I think it came out better than I expected! You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Re: 68 f100 restoration.
Today I worked on the tie-rod. In stead of buying a new one I decided to refurbish it my self. I got it torn apart, cleaned up and put back together. It now looks a lot nicer than before!
Here are some before and after shots.
This is when I started taking it apart. This is what it looks like now. I tore it all apart wire-wheeled everything, wiped it down with brakleen, and put it back together with some never-seize. Also the paint on the floor pan is just as shiny after it dried. I really didn't want it to be this glossy, I was hoping for a semi-gloss, but all the store had was gloss or flat and I wanted it a little shinier than flat. I am still happy with it even though it is shiny.

Re: 68 f100 restoration.
I also got the cab flipped back down! It looks so much more like a truck now. (or at least a part of one)
It still has a long way to go in just 6 months! Here it is beside our 1949 F1.
