re: Towing capacity for F100?

Post by Luckyman »

In my previous post wherein I opined that that 3500 & 5000 lb tow loads should be considered ok for 1/2 tons of the 67 to 79 vintage I was talking about trucks that are not highly modified for towing purposes. The biggest limitation in towing is brakes. If the brakes are beefed up or trailer brakes are used then of course the trucks can pull what ever you can hook up to. But then just because you can hook up to it and move it and with additional braking power you might even be able to stop it does not mean that it will not tear up your truck. Towing is hard on engines (ever hear of crank walking) transmissions and axles along with suspensions & brakes. My opinion on towing is based on the average truck with average equipment in average condition. Properly designed & set up I am sure that these trucks can be used to tow/haul heavier loads than the #'s mentioned above. Just be prepared to spend some $ and be carefull out there.
