Did some paint stripping today [LG. PICS]
Well, I got to spend the day in the shop today, spent a little time getting a rearend ready to take with me on my road trip in two weeks to go get my '68/'69 SWB 4x4 parts truck. I also had to mow the grass in the lot around the shop, but was pleasantly surprised when I got there today that a neighbor did it yesterday for me while trying out his new riding mower, so I was off the hook.
Decided to spend the rest of the day getting the rest of the front clip stripped down. The cab is already 99% down to bare metal, as are fenders, and now I needed to get the upper and lower valance panels and the hood done.
Here's a shot of the hood right after I got started:
In the background you can see that the valance panels are about 99% done, and just need a touchup with the sandblaster to get the nooks and crannies. The fenders there are also 99% done, a little light sanding and they're ready for paint.
...and here's a view of the finished product:
Man, doing this inside the shop wasn't one of my better ideas...I've got red dust all over everything! I walked around with the air nozzle blowing everything off, and then spent some time sweeping it up, but it hardly made a dent.
I used the 3M composite wheel in the angle grinder for the stripping. Since this will tend to heat up the metal, I was careful to keep it moving to prevent sheetmetal warpage. However, after I got done I noticed there were two high spots, which I believe was caused by heat. I'm going to mess around with it a little and see if I can't straighten it out, but if not, I've got another hood....and needless to say I won't be using the angle grinder on this one.
Well, I'm off to the showers to rinse off some of this red paint dust.

Had a few hours to kill this afternoon, so I got started stripping the backside of the hood.
I was using the 3M composite stripping wheel in the angle grinder for the flat areas and would occasionally switch to the wire wheel attachment to get the corners....and I got a little lesson in being careful about the direction of travel of the wire wheel when cleaning up panel edges. If you get too close to an edge, depending on which side of the wheel you're using, the wire wheel can catch the edge and jump out. It did that to me today, and my grinder turned into a vampire and tried to take a bite out of my neck!
It got wrapped up in my sweatshirt and stopped dead (I had the switch locked in the 'on' position). Took me a couple minutes to get it unwrapped from my sweatshirt, and needless to say it was trashed. Guess I'll be a little more observant in the future.

Man, you were lucky the wire wheel accident didn't turn out worse. I've seen some scary pics posted on the net from wire-wheel, sanding-disc, and abrasive-wheel accidents. I've started wearing a full face shield over the usual safety glasses.
When stripping the rusty top on my old Cougar I too got things a little hot and a few times heard the top go "boing" as the heat warped it and popped the metal one direction or the other. Same sound a few minutes later as it cooled and went back to it's original shape (I hope). Forgot once and leaned over too far and touched my bare arm to the spot I just stripped... Youch!

You were lucky Keith. A little more and it would have been your throat! Once I was using a big 1/2 HP grinder with a wire brush cup and ended up taking off most of the flesh on my knee cap. Don't take them for granted. They pack quite a bite!

Yeah, I agree it could have been worse. For the rest of the afternoon while I continued, I had visions of it hitting my jugular vein....Oh well, at least it didn't hurt the grinder.
I've had that Shaker setup for a long time, maybe 20+ years. It was on a local hotrod Cougar (not original) when it was wrecked and hauled to a local junkyard, where I was best friends with the yard man and he let me have it....after he'd 'adapted' the base to fit a GM Quadrajet. So the base is basically junk, although I still have it, but everything else is in really good shape. Figured I might has well play around a little and use it on this project. However, as mentioned I did specifically set aside another good hood to use in the case that I change my mind and decide that it looks funny.
