Hello,
After having my 72 2wd longbed/360/C6 sit for over 2 years, it was time to get it away from ‘found on rocks dying’ to ‘found on road driving’.
Good news is it fired right up on the 3rd key turn. No smoke, leaking (other that before) or other things that developed while sitting. So now to why it was parked. I changed out the carrier bearing, as the rubber surrounding it was dry rotted. I got part number HB88107-A from the local Napa, as they were the only store to carry the part. I live in Alaska and shipping is a killer…anyways, after it was changed out it developed a horrible vibration and rear end sway. Winter was coming soon and it got parked, until this week.
So the vibration is still there, and after much investigation I figured out that I lined up the ujoint 45* off. So I rotated half and hoped for the best and it is a little better but still there. The middle and rear joints seem fine, the front likes to stick to one side, preventing center spin. Tomorrow, I will rotate 90* and see if that helps.
So now with some questions, after a long winded explanation….the original (I think) carrier bearing was a SKB with a rubber “housing/bushing” marked as follows: PAT PENDING SPICER on one side, and 230983 - 1 72. The 72 is in a circle and spicer is in diamond. It there a better direct replacement? Does spacing require a shim, as I’m fairly certain that they sit at different center distances from the frame.
Oh, one last thing, I assume a transmission cooler should be center or lower than the trans. Is this a correct assumption!

A tight U joint will make a vibration.
The tranny cooler can go anywhere that convenient , it's under pressure.
I can't help with the bearing.

If I understand you, you have the driveshaft out of phase. All 3 U joints should operate on the same plane, when one is straight up, the others also should be. Any joint that is 45 from another will vibrate.
I don't know if you changed any U joints, but just taking it off and on, a needle could have gotten out of place, so if you are feeling a cup binding in one joint, it may need to be changed.

Thanks for the responses so far….I was unable to get back at it. We have had really strong winds again today, and I didn’t feel like getting rust and debris in my eyes n such again. Strange weather…….hopefully it’s better tomorrow and I can get back at it after work.

Turns out I discovered 2 u-joints were getting bounded up. In process of getting those swapped out and reinstalled. Will update results.
