1972 F250 Ranger XLT Project?

Post by lloyd70cs »

Hi everyone.

Its been a while since I have posted anything. In 2015 or so I bought a 1970 F250 CS 2wd to learn mechanics and have a classic truck at the end of the day. I posted lots of questions and learned a ton. Loved the truck but sold it in January this year for various reasons. Well, I hadn't been bumpless for very long and started to miss the ride so started looking around. There are not a lot of selection on Vancouver Island, BC. Ended up with this rusty 1972 F250 Ranger XLT CS. No title. Mallard Green with Mohave Tan. Not even sure if under all the rust and dirt there is a frame, cab, and enough pieces to make this the project or if this is the parts truck.

Here are some pictures.

I am ok with using this truck to learn welding on, as a friend has offered his and some instruction. Its not Iike i would be ruining a perfectly good canvas.

My goal at the moment though is just to see if the motor will run. Its stuck at the moment, not sure if that is the pistons or something else. I was only able to get three plugs out to start with everything still on the motor. Will have a better go once the brake booster and other things are removed and there is more room to work. Everything is soaking with Marvel Mystery Oil for now.

I'm not in a hurry as I have a house addition I'm supposed to be working on. Not supposed to be looking at this until I finish that. Somehow the carb ended up in the garage though...

Hope your engine can be refurbished. It's looking pretty sad but can be bought back to life. My 360 would run when i purchased it but needed a rebuild, so i did just that. Before and after pics.

Nice work! I will take it a bit at a time. Took the carb off last night and will rebuild it. If the engine is toast anyway I can always sell it or keep it as I will end up with a 360/390.

Well, a small update and a question or two.

I just got back from picking up another bump. My son and I drove 1800 km round trip to pick up a 1970 F100 roller. The plus is this had a title, a pretty decent cab that was already stripped and a good hood, 9 inch rear end and 5 lug is more versatile. The frame and running gear are alright too, but the bed is probably worse that the F250. Its hard to tell cause its so covered in bondo that it looks like a birthday cake!

I have actually put the two up for sale as there is a lot of work to do to get this to a running project that can be driven and worked on, more than I had wanted to get myself into. If they sell then that's fine, if not I will start attacking the body work and looking for what I still need.

My question is if i wanted to put the 390 and c6 from the F250 in the F100, can I use the driveshaft from the F250 as well or will I have to find something different? The F100 didn't come with one. It originally had a 302. Can I use the C6? The F250 has a Dana 60 I believe.

Thanks.

I would keep the bed from the F250. It has the bedside toolbox. Don't know about the driveshaft question.

Just measure the u-joint to see if it will match the 9". You should be able to use all your F250 parts. Good luck and don't give up. Looks like you have the parts needed to make one good truck there!
