Painting 390 valve covers
The PO installed chrome valve covers, they looked like junk when I got them, worse now with rust and pit. Fortunately I have a pair of 'powered by ford' originals, which I've media blasted, they're clean. Question is how to recoat them in Ford blue? What primer, paint, will last, any tricks to making them look like new. Thanks!

Re: Painting 390 valve covers
The mustang guys have done pages on the correct paint color.
As for paint itself I had real good luck with POR15 engine enamel.

Re: Painting 390 valve covers
I DIDNT use primer on my cleaned valve cover (strait six) and painted with Duplicolor brand engine enamel. I swear by that stuff, but think the primer is counterproductive when using engine enamel.
For my 67, Old Ford Blue was the correct color. Then there is ‘Ford Blue’ also which is used on some years I think.

No primer.......I wash mine down with acetone before painting to make sure they're clean and I've used this paint with good results..........

+2 on using no primer... I think they were paintend without from the factory.
I cleaned them up with a soft grinding wheel on a drill machine and softening the result with some fine and soft grinding pads. Then brake cleaner, air pressure and then the paint. I used VHT engine enamel out of a spray can with great success on the whole engine

Any decent engine enamel paint should do the trick.
