Hood hinge spring confusion

Post by Ohiotinkerer »

Trying to locate a new set of springs for my 1968 hood and am at a complete loss...... :? Most everyplace I look lists from 1961-66 or 1973-80 - LMC and DC are the only ones that list any for a bump and they are only listed for 1970-72. Is there any difference between the 67-69 and the 70-72 springs?......... :help:

I went thru my parts and these work for 68. The number everyone uses is C7TZ-16796-E,
LMC pg.11 40-3880, 3881
I hope this helps, good luck.

Info from "the Dark Side" but my research seems it to be accurate. All scarce as hen's teeth. Nobody remans them and everything I find for sale is used.

That's what I'm unfortunately finding out.........I can buy the whole hinge with the spring for some reason but can't get just the spring for a 67-72..........makes absolutely no sense...... :?

When you get 'em and determine they are correct, how about getting some dimensions for us? Overall length, wire diameter, number of coils, ID and OD, etc. If we knew more about them, we may be able to find a suitable substitute online at some place like this https://www.thespringstore.com/pe243-15 ... -z-in.html

Thanks for that cdnwillyg! I never bothered to check the LMC catalog. Sometimes the simplest solutions elude me.

Last I looked they were listed for 1970-72........didn't know if there was a difference for 1967-69 or not and couldn't get a straight answer from them......... :x ..............and have pretty much sworn off them ever since I got some rubber seals from them and 1 year later they looked almost as bad as the ones I took off........ :cuss:

I'll still give an update on the ones I get - they were $15 apiece also.......probably gonna find out they are the same ones LMC gets..........

Got them today - they were the last pair he had and still have the Ford service parts tag on them........ :woohoo:

I will post pictures with all the measurements as soon as I can so everyone will have a reference for aftermarket springs........

The 68-72 springs are the same. The 67 springs were made of a flat coil. Instead of the round coil stock of the 68-72. I have no idea if the 73-79 will work with our trucks or not. But they probably will.

Thanks for the info - I couldn't even get people that sell them to give me a straight answer.............just didn't want to buy a set and go to the trouble of putting them on to find out they were wrong........ :cuss:

ok guys reading through these I got a question every time I work on my truck then drive it. If the hood doesn't latch all the way or at all- will it fly up and smash my windshield /cab goin down the road? After every time I work in there I pull over and check it quick cause it's easy just to push it down and forget.
Anybody else paranoid like me about it?
