painting new hood hinges
Received the new hood hinges from DC and i want to paint them. Do i need to remove the factory coating that is on them or can i just clean/prep the coating to paint? My plans are to use the VHT primer and paint. Forgive my knowledge but what is this gold looking coating.

Probably zinc chromate. Will have to be etched first. http://forum.eastwood.com/showthread.ph ... nc-Plating

Re: painting new hood hinges
Maybe a dumb question, but why? I'd think DC would reproduce them as Ford intended. I typically just hit the rusty old ones with some really cheap flat black like the 99 cent cans from Wally World. Gives them a black oxide look.

I blasted mine, sprayed them with Rust Encapsulator and Chassis Black and installed new springs After the paint cured, lubed them up and bagged 'em for future installation.

I did blast the old awhile back and painted them and tried to make them work before i spent $$ for a new pair My left side was bent to the point i could not repair it. How it got beat up like that ,i have no clue. PO i guess. Far as painting them,i want another color.Ranchero50 wrote:Maybe a dumb question, but why? Re: painting new hood hinges
Some people do just the opposite and redo the zinc chromate on old sets. I believe that is the look from the factory. Some other parts like the brake boosters were the same way.

I thought the original hinge finish on bumps was a grey phosphate.

POR-15 in black brushes on easily, flows out smooth, is tough as can be, and handles any rust. Pretty hard to beat for an in-place spiffing-up of hood hinges, I've found.

POR-15 will only stick to a rough like sandblasted or rusty surface, or your hands or the lid .
