Steering question

Post by towtruckerfour »

Hey guys. I need help with the steering setup on my 4x4. The truck is a 68 F250 frame with a 70 F100 body on it. I'm wondering if the steering setup is correct or not. Could somebody post a picture of a stock gearbox mounted to the frame? Thanks

If the sector shaft is horizontal and coming out of the side thru a hole in the frame it is an F250 4x4 box.

If the sector shaft is vertical, it is not an F250 4x4 box.

If you still need a pic tomorrow, let me know.

Troy,
Here's the schematic for the highboy with manual steering.
I can't seem to be able to find one for a highboy with PS. :hmm:

Hey guys. I found this picture I took when the body was off. This kinda shows what I have. Looking on the Oreilly website, it looks like a 2wd gearbox. There is a notch cut out of the frame on the inside where it mounts and a plate welded on the outside for strength I guess. That is why I'm thinking this is not original.

if it has 3 bolts it's a 68-79 2wd box, 4 bolts it's a 78-79 F-250 4x4 box. Judging off only what's in your picture I say 78-79 F-250 4x4 box since it appears to be the same height as the frame rail and the pitman arm is from a 78-79 F-250 4x4 box, not a 2wd app.

It has three mounting bolts so I'm guessing its the 2wd. It works but is leaking fluid all over the frame. Is this a common upgrade? I was considering rebuilding it but have never done one. Oreilly has a new one for around $160.00.

The seal kit's like $15. Any old ford shop manual explains in detail how to take it apart, re-assemble and adjust it.

DO NOT DISASSEMBLE THE BALLNUT! No reason to do so and if you do you will make tenfold more work for yourself.

Ok. I pulled the gearbox out and now I can't really tell where the leak is from. The gearbox has 4 mounting holes so I'm thinking you were right Dustin. Here is a better picture of the box and pitman arm. You can see in the first picture how they modified it to fit.

They both have D7 numbers on them so it is definitely not original. I might try rebuilding it so I know it has no leaks.

Thanks for the picture Tony. I bought a kit and swapped out the main seals that I could get to. It was not as bad as I expected. It is back in the truck and works good so far. I bought a new pressure line also since it was all apart anyways. Thanks for the help guys. By going off the casting numbers, this steering box was out of a 77.
