Treading where many men won't. 2wd to 4x4 No frame swap

Post by dacockrell »

So I have a 1971 f100 2wd 302 C4 and a 9in. I found a dana 44 hp from a 79 150 a C6 and 205 tcase and a rear dana 60 with factory 4.10s all together for under 500. I have the whole steering system from a 79 f150 also. So far the trans tunnel for a C6 got put in along with the C6. Next is mounting the tcase and modifiying the old crossmember to work. So far so good. I'll have updates on everything in the next few days along with some pictures.

Heres an update for all whose interested. I installed the 205 into the truck this afternoon. I've got a crossmember made. I just need to finish weld it tomorrow. I made it out of the two old trans crossmembers that came in the truck. The front one was the base of it and the rear trans crossmember got dissected. I cut the top off and welded it to the top of the base crossmember to level it out. The trans mount that came on the C6 was used and I welded in some 1/2 in square tube on the bottom of the mount to acted as some spacing between the crossmember and the mount. Tomorrow the new crossmember will get finish welded and installed in the truck along with the Tcase mount. More to follow soon.

Some more info here on the madness ensuing. Transfer case mount and the new crossmember are done. I got a new starter from the local auto store. The tcase shifter went in along with all the trans linkage is hooked back up. The header was a headache to get back in. I don't think they're the correct ones. The dana 60 for the rear got new brakes and hardware and is just waiting for the drums to get turned. Now I'm just waiting on a few last minutes parts to finish the dana 44 for the front then the puzzles going to together. The next updates going to be awhile because I'm about to go on a field exercise with my unit for a few weeks then its back at it for one last push before deployment.

Back with some more. Got back from the field and started back to work. Installed the new trans cooler lines and filled the trans and tcase. took out the old 9in rear end and put in a dana 60 full floating with 4.10 gears along with all new stainless steel brakes lines. Everythings back together and driveable. The last few parts I need for my dana 44 are on backorder so it looks like after deployment is when its all going to be put together. So deployements a few weeks away so its time to put the old girl into storage, hate to do it but i have to. Soon as i get back from the sandbox shes going to get finished up proper.

I know its been forever but I'm back from my trip to the sandbox. Back to work on the old girl. The axles are rebuilt with new gears, bearings and limited slips. Next week im going to pick up a rebuilt ZF 5 speed for it too. The rear axle is back in and I'm starting on putting in the front axle this weekend. When I get my taxes back the 35's are coming.

Don't know how I ever missed this thread! It's my build I always wanted to do, and I had all the parts for the build until I had to move a year ago. And hey...Rob didn't do it so I will man!
