Dana 24 yoke question

Post by BullDog71 »

I have a Dana 24 Transfer case in my '69. I'm replacing both seals and notice (at least on the rear yoke) some pretty good wear where the seal meets the yoke. Can anyone suggest a source for a new rear yoke for this thing? I hit the Dana website and couldn't find anything helpful.

Thanks

Can you get a speedy sleeve for it? Try a place called Quad 4x4. I have had good luck with np205 stuff with them.

Try DTS if they don't have the yoke, they would know where to get it I'm sure:

Hey thanks for the info and replies. I'll definitely check out those links. I finally got the thing in the parts washer and got some good measurements on the OD of the yoke. That groove I mentioned is only .010" so I might be able to double up the 5/16" thick oil seals to get a good seal? Hopefully this will let me avoid buying a new yoke for a while.

Thanks again!

I used a speedy sleeve and would recommend it. You should apply an epoxy to fill the groove before putting the speedy sleeve on.

Found a real good site. Found the site while searching "speedy sleeve kits".

Ok last question to add on this topic, I promise. I seem to be having trouble finding the correct replacement for the yoke retaining nut. I stopped by a fastener supply house (with the old nut) on the way home and the dude is telling me it is a 7/8-16 nut and he's never seen one!??? I've seen some nuts for the NP205's but they're 3/4-20 I believe.

So, the question is...what the heck size nut do I need and where can I get my hands on one if they're so rare (according to the fastener supply)?

I would go to a transmission rebuilder. One that's been around awhile. Dana cases were popular for repair in the 80's. Not so much 30 years later.

Automotive fasteners are often designed around the product not the other way around. OE's have fasteners made by the billions to thier specs, they don't usually pick off the shelf stuff.

Makes sense Dustin. I never figured on having trouble finding a replacement shaft nut..good grief. There's a pretty well known old shop here in town, I'll hit him up tomorrow.

Thanks for the responses!

I might have that nut on the shelf here. I scrapped out a Dana 24 case a few years back, (old IH Scout) and I'm real bad about keeping little parts like that. I'll look later this afternoon and try to come back here tonight to let you know. You'd be more than welcome to if for just the shipping if you can't find one locally.
