HELP!!Pickup makes my clothes smell like Oil/Gas

Post by 71Ford »

My wife complains everyday when I get home because my clothes smell like oil/gas from driving my pickup......She's not amused when I tell her,"It masks the scent of perfumes the stippers were wearing ; ) ." ANYWAY is anybody else having this problem??? Is it a carburetor problem or exhaust problem. My pickup does not smoke at all. I've had my carb rebuilt, replaced fuel pump, timing chain, etc., etc. but the exhaust is 35 years old w/ 200K so I might need to change it out..but like I said, it does NOT smoke at all.

Thanks for any suggestions,
Shawn

The exhaust is probably leaking fumes.

or the fuel tank you are sitting in front of.
maybe the fumes soaked into the seat.

I That that is how all ford trucks 20-30 + years old are supposed to smell!

Try changing the rubber parts of the fuel system.
Filler neck to tank. Any and all crossover(early Smog Crap before the pump.) Hoses and the gasket around the sending unit and the gromet around the fill neck. were it goes through the body.

If you have the in cab tank I would start by replacing the filler neck hose. Those get old and crack, leting gas fumes into the cab. Do NOT use radiator hose for this!
You can get the hose from LMC or Dennis Carpenter, or you may be able to get one from your local auto parts store.

No, the nuns in the station wagon find that terribly distracting.

I agree with 72hiboy4x4 and flyboy2610, The back of the seat could be saturated with fuel/fumes or the tank filler hose could be broken. But here is one other thought.
If your 71 has the vapor canister venting system check those lines as well. You will know it by simply folding the seat foreward and looking at the top of the tank for what looks like a copper pipe loop with a few hoses running off to the passenger side of the cab.
There is a vapor canister mounted under the hood on the frame that could be clogged/mucked up causing a venting issue inside your cab.
It may smell like gas inside your truck and you may not notice it because your used to it.
- OR -
Have you lifted the carpet recently? Are the floor boards still solid?
Could be exhaust fumes seaping up thru the bottom of the cab. Check all firewall plugs and seals where wiring, heater/AC system passes thru as well.

In short. If it smells like fuel or exhaust in your cab fix it A.S.A.P! That is a dangerous situation that shouldnt be taken lightly.
