If I can get the carrier in without a 5 lb deadblow it's too loose, you can't get too much carrier preload. I think case spreaders give a false sense of confidence. I've never used one, I can't see how it could be beneficial if you know what you're doing and have "the knack" for this type of work. This week I've been teaching my helper how to set up diffs and I bet I've heard "More shim? Are you serious?" a couple dozen times.

It's pretty easy to spread the case, yes even with external shims, .020 and more with a 5 lb deadblow. Much faster too.
