Mirror Choices

Post by mike_68 »

In all the factory literature for these trucks, I see these (see pic) kind of small single post mirrors, yet I don't think I've ever seen these on any live trucks I see driving around today.

What are the cons to using these? Limited sight to the truckbed?

I'm looking for new ones (style TBD), so if you have a good reference on where to buy them, please post it. Thanks.

You can buy the mirrors in your attachment from the usual vendors, Dennis Carpenter, NPD, etc. They are also on Ebay all the time.

My 69 F100 has one of these on the drivers door (stock). It also had west coast mirrors. I took them off and ordered a small mirror for the right side from LMC. It matches well. As long as you don't haul stuff that hangs over the side of the box or pull a wide trailer the small mirrors should work fine. West coast style mirrors will cost you a mile per gallon on the highway. I have big mirrors on my other truck for trailer towing.

For some reason, alot of people do not like those mirrors, and they take them off and put the big v-shaped mirrors that are on the early 90s trucks on their 67-72. My truck had them, and I could not stand them. I do not think they look good with the body on these trucks, although they do look good on the early 90s trucks. I know alot of people on here like them, and I am not trying to make anyone mad. You can get the kind of mirrors you are looking for off of any truck up to the late 80s. I got mine off of a mid 80s truck and they are the same as my dads stock mirrors to his truck.

I put a set of the small mirrors on my 68 and I like the look a lot better than the west coast mirrors. JMHO.... You really don't see too much out of them though so you might want to think about what you'll be hauling. Mine is just for fun and I went for the look instead of practicality.

Just to give you a look at how they came out check out the attachment.

I think that looks sharp. I have camper mirrors on my truck right now and plan to replace them with those small mirrors.

The problem with my camper mirrors is they make alot of wind noise, and even worse, you can't see to the left when I'm at a stop sign. I always have to lean to and frow to make sure I don't hit someone coming from the left.

Compared to the towing mirrors I don't think you can see as much. I have pair to put on my truck once I decide to remove the towing/camper special mirrors. The change might save 0.01 mpg.

That's exactly why I decided to go with the small ones. I live down the street from a rotary and I looked like a bobbin fool trying to see if I was going to get hit from the left. What a difference now. Hardtail John now has my Big mirrors and hope he's happy with them, sure he is being a semi driver and all.

I think the truck looks faster now, more sleek with the little ones. :dk: Now I just have to figure out how to get 830HP out of the 360

Hi John,

We were typing at the same time. Glad you're happy with them. Don't get me wrong, you can definately compensate for whatever blind spots there are, but it gave me a great reason to get something off ebay and I scored the 61 ranchero on the way to pick them up. I'm a lucky man..... :D

Send me a pick of your truck so I can see em.

I like both and have both kinds. My 68 is the first one with the west coast mirrors and all my other trucks always seemed to have the small passenger car style just on the driver's side. Unless I am towing or doing a lot of reversing, I prefer the look of the smaller mirrors.

My truck cam stock with just the small mirror on the drivers side. My dad put on some aftermarket west coast types and I drove it like that until I re-painted the truck. I put 2 of the small mirrors on it becasue I liked the looks better.
It stayed that way about 6 months until I could'nt stand it anymore. I put some Ford west coast mirrlos back on it. My truck is a dailer driver work truck and I usually run a shell on it. I just felt like I cold see behind and beside me with the small mirrors on it. I also pull a trailer on occasion
