I have looked all over. Can you guys tell me what 4 speed Ford used in its 1981 trucks?? Its bolted to a 300-6. It has the same shift pattern as a NP435.
My in-laws have the truck. I never really looked at it until yesterday, since it the wrong generation & everything.
The truck is a 1981 F-100 (or 150), 300-6, 4speed.
Thanks guys.

I think those were the T&C 4 speeds with a OD 4th. That may be the
same as a "Clark". Seems I've heard some call them that.

Re: 1981 F-100 4 speed
I found it. Its a NP435.
Do you guys think it would work with my 302? Its bolted to a 300-6, so im thinking it will. From what I can tell, it isint equipped with a hydraulic clutch set-up. But the clutch linkage looks different to me. It still has a clutch rod very similar to my 71 yet it looks different.
So ill need a NP435 short drive shaft & flywheel..? What else.??? What about the clutch linkage.???

The straight 6's have the same bolt pattern as the smallblocks.

Just the bell housing part is different from FE to SB/6 the transmissions are the same. Just pull the trans and put it in the bell housing you have, use the clutch and clutch linkage you have.
Here is a web site that I use to see what transmissions were in what and the differences of them http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/tr ... ateway.htm

Re: 1981 F-100 4 speed
Well, after actually crawling under the truck & getting covered in ticks, I have found out its actually a B/W T-18.
It has Borg-Warner stamped on the side of the case. The only reason it threw me off was cause reverse is to the right & down. They must have changed the reverse pattern on the T-18's at some point in time. Im use to seeing the old T-18's with reverse to the right & up.
The clutch linkage looks like it will work as well, its basically the same as my 71's linkage.
Im going to pull it next weekend, so i'll let you guys know.

Re: 1981 F-100 4 speed
the np435 has a aluminum top cover. and the T18 has a steel top cover. that is the way it was on our trucks anyway. i would guess it would be the same for the newer transmissions also. one ohter way to tell is how the shifter is held into the top cover. if the shifter can be removed by pushing down and turning the cap it is a np 435. if the cap screws off it is a T18. i hope it work for what you want.

Re: 1981 F-100 4 speed
Thanks fordman. I did a little more reserch & found out that Borg/Warner changed the reverse location in 1978, to over & down. Just like a NP435.
Im going to spend all this comming up weekend pulling it & rounding up everything I need to put it in my truck.
Thunderfoot, that Novak website is freekin' awsome. Thanks for the link!
