I've done that a couple times. Found out that the thinkness of the gasket was the problem. They need to be the very thin type. My Subaru uses the same one exept it is thick. Now you know how I broke mine.

I don't want to give em a heart-attack. That is what would happen if I answered the door in the buff. Heck it almost scares me to death when I step out of the shower and look in the mirror.~Mancar1~

Aw, you could just pop on down to WallyWorld and get a tube of Thermostat housing glue and she'll be good as new.
And dont forget to get some liquid bolt shrinker. I am sure the bolts have strectched a bit.
I can laugh only because I dun it too. Threw out the paper one and replaced with a homemade cork one. I had a roll of the stuff left over. Its 4 times as thick as paper and no leaky. Yet.

I figured out why my mechanical temp gauge was reading 140 degrees. I pulled the housing off and found the t-stat sitting sideways. Yes, it was still intact. Turns out that there are three different sizes of t-stat housings. I had the wrong housing. I checked out two chrome housings and they both were the wrong size. I had to hunt the boneyards until I found one that fit the t-stat and the radiator hose.
For my 460 I used the housing off a Ford diesel engine. It fit just right and was pointed the right way. Now I have a blue engine with a gray water neck. Function before fashion.
