Here's my project update (56k warning pics)

Post by mljjones67 »

I thought I would start a thread about the progress of my truck. Just started and it's on it's way.
Today I spent a few hours grinding most of the paint off the junk yard fenders. Still not complete.
They look pretty good so far.
Just a couple spots I will have to repair.
Talk a about labor intensive. My hands are still tingling!

Here's the rust through on the right fender. Couple tack welds should fill them up.
I just need to figure out how to stop whats going on behind the brace in the back. I need to search here
cause I think Keith did a repair on the back like this one.

Last of all I think I need to name this project. I was thinking white fang???? I like that movie and the truck
will be white.

Hers a pic of the current state. Except I have the radiator out and timing cover off.

How are you stripping the paint? A DA and 80 grit shouldn't take too long and you hands won't tingle afterwards. I would strip the back too.

About a name. 'White Fang' is too long. You can keep that name but just call it 'Fang' for short. My truck is the Purple People Eater, but everyone calls it PPE for short.

Here is what I used to strip the outside. I used the wire wheels the sanding pads
were a little to aggressive and taking to much metal off. I will probably use those
for the back side.

I am thinking I will have to cut some of the fender bracing out to get to the rust behind to stop it. Here is a
photo of where I think I will cut.

I cut the backs off of both fenders. The brown fender that had the rust holes
had some pretty good pits. I think it will be ok. Might have to run a bead or
two along the pits to toughen them a bit.

To fill those pits, you should seriously consider getting a tube of POR-Putty...it's like POR-15 in a tube. The same stuff, just thicker, like toothpaste. I love that stuff! It'll fill all those in nicely. That's what I used on mine, that looked pretty much like yours. Look at Figs. 10 thru 15 at the following link:

Thanks keith. I will get some of the por patch. That will help a bunch. Did you ever figure out why the fenders were not sitting good on the cab? Both of my new fenders are 71's I hope they fit.
