re: a first step towards a paint job
Update
Original box is removed from the truck,4th door repair is nearing completion, rear door panel speaker hole cut out repaired (see photo attached). The front clip is coming off as soon as it warms up. I have ordered and recieved the Dennis Carpenter Cab mounts and hope to lift the cab soon after the front clip is off- no heat in the shop so must delay this project for a short time

re: a first step towards a paint job
4th door has been completed and front end sheet metal is in the process of being removed. I found my radiator saddle to be in very poor condition (why does this not suprise me) upon tear down. I have since located a new correct NOS Ford saddle had had it shipped in (photo attached). I have also ordered and recieved the little clear lock rod bezels for the doors. Hope to have a decent day tomorrow to actually get over to the truck and turn some wrencheshttp://community.webshots.com/photo/111 ... 5034RWJXOu

re: a first step towards a paint job
Front end is finally off---I lost track but I believe there is about 200 bolts on the front of that truck and 199 of them needed a vise grip or wrench to hold the rusty nut or broken clip on the back side. What a PITA

re: a first step towards a paint job
It wasn't the smoothest operation I have preformed
How I lifted my cab off. (by 4x4x4crewcab)
Stopped and picked up some beer and just drank and stared at it for a while. I tried a couple different ideas with long planks and floor jacks then drank a few more beers. Then my brother came up with the plan that we used--(he don't drink) . We ran to a farm supply store and picked up some plastic coated wire cable and 4 of those small u-bolt looking wire splices wrapped them around the center pillers and put a engine puller on each side lifted and rolled the frame forward. It was a little difficult getting the rear tires past the engine pullers. We had to stop and reposition which made the engine pullers want to tip but at this point we weren't stopping and it was coming off one way or the other. At the very end of the frame we had two more guys hold the front of the cab level rolled the frame completly out and lowered the cab down.

re: a first step towards a paint job
Interesting! I don't suppose you got any pictures during the removal, did you? Sounds like it would have been an interesting procedure to watch. But hey, you got it done!
So what ARE you plans now? I'm assuming that with the cab off, at the very least you're going to paint the frame? Are you going to take it down to the bare frame...(drop the suspension, wiring, lines, etc.)?

re: a first step towards a paint job
I took my truck for a ride yesterday. well at least part of it went to the car wash.
http://community.webshots.com/photo/111 ... 2163EwZpIh
All week I was thinking tear it down and powdercoat---Then reality sets in Sat. I get up at 4:30 a.m. go to work a couple hours then go to my boys basketball game, stop and see the parents, help a friend with a short project and finally at 1:30 I can start. If I want to drive this truck again I had better get my a** in gear. So I loaded it up took it to the car wash and will see what I can do with it from this point I will replace the rear brake line and the fuel line for sure. Until I get to sanding, striping, painting etc.. I really don't know what i'll do until I see how it comes out.So what ARE you plans now? I'm assuming that with the cab off, at the very least you're going to paint the frame? Are you going to take it down to the bare frame...(drop the suspension, wiring, lines, etc.)?

re: a first step towards a paint job
Looking GOOD, Mark! I know exactly what you're going through as far as the "well, I'm this far.. might as well do this now, too" thing....hahaha
(I went to change oil on an airplane I own in 1988, and it's not together yet.. haha.. but it will be perfect when I get it done! ).
My suggestion is to run down to the local Caterpillar dealer and get a gallon or two of their black semi-gloss paint and have at your frame! I use that stuff on all sorts of things around here, and it's really tough, and easy to apply.. not too picky on how warm it is, and as long as the rust isn't scaly, it will seal it right up! The best part is that it's inexpensive!! You could also probably find the same sort of thing at a Tractor Supply store.
Good luck, and keep those pictures coming!
John H.
