Various Capacities?

Post by Drednme »

What are the front end, rear end, transfercase, and transmission capacitiees on these old beasts? Also what weights should be used? I was thinking 85-90 in all of them.

4spd manual and transfer case (from my owners manual 1970) above 10 deg--SAE50 oil----below 10deg---SAE30 OIL
If I remember correct Valvoline sold a straight 50 weight oil--thats what I used
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Front and rear axle 80-90 should be fine
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Steering knuckles---somewhere I had read 150 weight oil (can not find now) owners manual looks like its listed with the Conventional rear axle lube so 80-90w will work but if your wiper seals are shot it will run right back out and if thats the case and you dont want to fix right away the old timers said they just pumped grease in there. I used a current Ford lube sold at the dealers. I think it was like a 120 weight rear axle oil I will have to look in the garage but it was like 12.00 bucks a quart

as for the capacities go to the downloads on the home page of this site and click on the 1968 shop tips page. Page 3 on that will have all the capacities listed for your truck

Good info. My 74 highboy had a doorjamb sticker that stated just what you said for the tranny, and the T-case too I think but different T-case use different oil. some use ATF. I also pumped gun grease into the front knuckles. I ilked the white Lubriplate but I think any chassis lube would work. It also has the added benafit of keeping out water if you have it packed full of grease.
Great ideas have always encounter violent opposition from mediocre minds.

I have heard of people mixing gear oil and bearing grease together for knuckles.
